In the research project RETRAKT, six project partners from research, the textile sector, and the IT industry jointly explore and test how the textile industry can successfully shape the transformation towards a circular economy in accordance with the new EU legislation.

FOM University of Applied Sciences

FOM University of Applied Sciences was founded as an initiative of an economically focused foundation and has university centres in 30 regions in Germany. In addition, since the winter semester 2021, the university has been offering digital live studies, which are broadcasted from multifunctional FOM Studios. As a practically-oriented university for professionals, FOM promotes the transfer of knowledge between the university and business. At the same time, all courses are tailored to the needs of professionals and trainees.

Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen

The Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University – a university-based research and teaching institution – is the core of the ITA Group International Centre for Sustainable Textiles. The ITA is part of RWTH’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and is responsible for the textile-related curriculum of the ‘Plastics and Textile Technology’ study program in various Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen. The ITA Group is an international research and training service provider for fibre-based high-performance materials, textile semi-finished products and their manufacturing processes with about 400 employees. A key future topic is the holistic biotransformation of textile technology to ensure the use of biological principles for circular value-creation processes.

CCE & HumTec of RWTH Aachen University

The Center for Circular Economy (CCE) at RWTH Aachen University brings together the expertise of all faculties and 35 institutes at RWTH Aachen University in the field of sustainable circular economy. It connects member institutes with relevant stakeholders from science, business, administration, politics, and society to jointly research and implement solutions for a circular economy. In this way, the CCE promotes awareness of the social significance of a circular economy and strengthens understanding of its processes and findings. Together with its network partners, the CCE formulates strategies and goals, develops suitable concepts, and puts them into practice. The three core areas of the CCE focus on the development of transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary methods for process optimization throughout the entire product life cycle: sustainable product design, business models, and material recovery. Das Human Technology Center (HumTec) ist Partner des CCE und fördert interdisziplinäre Forschung zwischen Natur-, Technik-, Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften.

i2solutions GmbH

As an IT service provider, i2solutions GmbH offers customized solutions for information and control systems for numerous industrial applications. With around 40 employees, the company provides comprehensive services in the project business, from the conception to the implementation of customized software solutions, meeting the requirements of Industry 4.0. With a strong focus on the security aspects of industrial networks, combined with in-depth experience in software development, i2solutions acts as a reliable partner for companies that want to digitize and optimize their processes.

ORTOVOX SPORTARTIKEL GmbH is a German sporting goods manufacturer specialized in mountain sports. The company is known for producing avalanche transceivers, backpacks and functional outdoor and mountain sports apparel. A particular focus is placed on the use of wool. Sustainable thinking guides ORTOVOX’s business activities across all areas.

Thorey

Thorey Gera Textilveredelung GmbH is a textile finishing company that uses wet chemical finishing and functionalization processes to produce high-quality textile fabrics of all kinds according to customer specifications. The company has been applying functional, including adhesion-promoting, coatings to textiles for many years. Thorey’s own development and testing laboratory confirms the properties requested by the customer and offers further research and development work.

Workplace Innovation Europe CLG (WIE) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Ireland with an international board of directors and a commitment to support the development of human-centred workplaces through research, consultancy, professional development and policy advocacy. WIE is also co-founder of EUWIN (the European Workplace Innovation Network), sitting on its Executive Board and with specific responsibility for stakeholder engagement and communications. WIE can bring expertise in the human aspects of work including employee-driven innovation and change.

The European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing (Textile ETP) is the largest European expert network of professionals involved in textile and clothing research and innovation. It counts more than 200 member organisations and close to 500 registered experts from industry, research, academia and related technology and service sectors. It has been formally recognized by the European Commission as a valuable stakeholder organisation corresponding to the criteria of mission, governance, representativeness and transparency applicable to European Technology Platforms. Among the key objectives of the Textile ETP is the facilitation of transfer of research results and new technologies to industry with the ultimate goal of greater innovation capacity and improved competitiveness of the European textile and clothing sector.

The Technical University of Sofia is the first and largest university, having fostered the emergence of most of the higher technical universities in Bulgaria with the highest accreditation grade in engineering of all higher schools in Bulgaria, setting educational standards and introducing national priorities for development of education and science. The University is a leader in the field of mechatronics, virtual engineering, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, engineering ecology, and engineering design, in application of the best practices as philosophy and fundamental principles in engineering. Resilience Engineering acts as a portal, seamlessly connecting theory and practice, manoeuvering through complexity.

As a group of 19 Universities of Applied Sciences we set up an organization for textile and clothing research to support, strengthen, and safeguard our position in Europe. Together we cover a broad, complete, and up to date technology infrastructure. We practically have every processing unit required for textile and clothing research and production on lab and pilot plant scale. Diversity proved to be our strong point. In addition, also SME-associations will be contacted to participate. They are considered as important partners and a go-between for the dissemination of project results to the industry. Together we will be able to contribute to the impact of the textile and clothing industry in our society.

NETFAS - Network of European Textile and Fashion Universities of Applied Sciences

KAYA&KATO GmbH is a manufacturer of workwear, care, and service clothing for the hospitality industry, gastronomy, and bakeries, as well as for the healthcare sector and home use. KAYA&KATO is the first producer of fully sustainable professional clothing on the German market. All products are made from organic cotton or a polyester-cotton blend. The latter uses recycled plastic waste recovered from the ocean. All materials used by the company are certified according to leading ecological standards. All suppliers are personally known to the company to ensure high product standards and fair working conditions.

KAYA&KATO GmbH

Since January 2022, the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) has a Technical Committee (TC) dedicated to Resilience Engineering (RE). In line with core human factors and ergonomics values, RE is systems-oriented and regards variability as an inevitable portion of everyday work, which is responsible for both desired and undesired outcomes. Therefore, the new TC acknowledges RE as a mainstream approach, which can benefit from and contribute to the broader human factors and ergonomics community.

V. is an innovative knowledge network composed of companies representing the entire textile value chain, educational institutions, research institutes, and industry-relevant bodies. As part of its events, Dialog Textil-Bekleidung e. V. provides a national and international platform for open dialogue among industry professionals to jointly develop future-oriented solutions for the textile sector.
